SLAPDASH - a Nursery and Old Vic co-production in the Old Vic Tunnels, 21st - 23rd July
The Festival
Slapdash is a gathering of the best improvisers in the UK, all in one place for the very first time. No one knows what will happen each night, only that what you see will be totally new, totally unrepeatable. It might be hilarious, touching, or just plain odd. All we can guarantee is entertainment.
Each night three companies will show off their distinctive styles, from a three-headed expert to an improvised musical, from classic forms like the Harold to the improvised Shakespeare. Then the night will finish with an Improv Jam, where all the improvisers work together to create something extraordinary.
It’s a feast for those who love improvisation, and a chance for those who don’t know what it is to learn to love it. All for just £8 per night.
Come on down!

The Space
In January 2010, The Old Vic acquired the license from Lambeth Council to use Tunnels 228-232 beneath Waterloo Station as a performance venue until the end of December following the critical success of Tunnel 228 – a collaborative project between the Old Vic Theatre and Punchdrunk, which combined theatre performance and art installation. BRB (Residuary)’s kind donation of the space has opened up a wealth of opportunity in a highly unusual environment.
The Old Vic’s mission is to present all elements of DISCOVERY, for a more affordable ticket price with an eye to new collaborations. The Old Vic Tunnels continues to strive to present work which may be site specific, raw, new, cross media, with a view to attracting a younger audience with Metropolitan flair. TOVT’s mission is to proudly promote developing artists, and new and undiscovered work by proving them with an outlet for their talent.
This is what Artistic Director Kevin Spacey had to say: “The Old Vic is thrilled to be developing plans for this incredible space, where exciting performances and creative collaborations will feature throughout the year. Inspired by the success of Tunnel 228 last year, this epic space beneath Waterloo Station will again host memorable experiences for visitors.”
And later this year: The Nursery Festival 2010
About the festival
The Nursery is a festival of new, devised and improvised theatre in its second year. We operate in found spaces, giving opportunities for people to show new work in a supportive and enjoyable environment. We also run a bar and a programme of music and food before and after the shows, plus scratch showings.
We are now open for submissions for our 2010 season, which will probably be 30/9-16/10.
The Space
Although we have not yet found our space for this year, it is unlikely to be a location normally used for performance. The technical spec will be basic, as will the dressing room facilities. The stage will be small, and sets will need to be easily moved for the other acts and shows.
The space itself will be both a bar and theatre and, although we will not serve during the show, this is worth bearing in mind when considering shows to be submitted.
The Shows
Shows should be between 40 and 75 minutes long, may be on any topic or in any style as long as they are new, devised or improvised. Shows using an existing text as a starting point are acceptable, as long as the production significantly re-imagines it.
We offer a £150 budget to be spent at the director’s/company’s discretion on condition receipts are submitted and ask that you apply using the form available from the address below.
Scratch Showings
These can be anything and everything (max 20mins) and need not use the application form. Just put your idea in an email.
